Duke is the field commander of the G.I.JOE's and rugged leader of the team, being the second in command to General Hawk. Duke's actual name is First Sergeant Conrad S. Hauser. He is a master of multiple languages and trained with special forces. As the team leader he has helped the Joes's foil numerous attacks led by Cobra Commander. He first appeared in Marvel Comics G.I.JOE series #22 in 1983.
